The third iWild site was Nant Mill in Wrexham, which is a gorgeous woodland valley along the Clywedog trail. As part of the iWild project, 5 Bushnell camera traps were placed here for 3 weeks… We’d heard rumblings of otters on the river, but there hadn’t been any confirmed sightings. There were also whispers of roe deer – another species we’ve yet to capture in the project. Whilst setting out the camera traps, one of the iWild volunteers spotted tracks in the mud by the stream – the camera traps would reveal what animal had left them!

Yes – brown rats. Quite a lot of them too! Whether you love them or loathe them, they are a new species for the project. We also ticked off red-legged partridge and a buzzard surprised us again, for the second time in just three sites! 
Two iWild volunteers set up one of the Nant Mill camera traps…
Admittedly, we were surprised at how quiet Nant Mill was in terms of wildlife – we expected the camera traps to be slightly busier. The site is busy with dog walkers, but so are Loggerheads and Gathering Grounds – yet we captured much more activity in these parks. The Nant Mill camera traps yielded about 300 wildlife records, whilst the previous two parks were both over 450! It looks like the cameras captured two individual foxes – one with a bad case of mange. Badgers eventually showed up too, continuing their record of appearing at every site so far… The next event will see the camera traps collected from Alyn Waters in Wrexham – and we need your help! All events are completely free and we hope to see you there.
